The family was living in Ohio when Martha became ill and it was decided they should move south to warmer weather for her health. The family of Ira North and his wife Harriett Newel Eggleston began a journey in 1849 along with a companion, one Martha Skillern. Harriett became increasingly ill and the family stopped near Nashville, Tenn. Shortly before her death from tuberculosis she asked Martha Skillern to marry her husband and raise her five children, to which Martha agreed. After the death of Harriett they buried her by the side of the road and approx. one month later Martha Skillern and Ira North were married. Martha continued to raise all of Harriet Newell Eggleston's children and later the couple had 6 more children of their own. Buried on the side of the road near Ethridge, Tenn... 500' off Highway 64, west of Lawrenceburg, on the Gensen Rd. Harriett Newell Eggleston's grave is today on private property and is surrounded by a small fence and eventually the North family added a concrete area marking the grave site and erected a tombstone. The owners of the property continue to allow visits to the grave site and once a year, the North family of Tenn., visit the grave site. Harriett Newell Eggleston and Ira North are the 2nd great grandparents of Judy North. Their son, Ira North Jr., (married to Mary Elizabeth "Bettie" Gooch) is her great grandfather. Ira North Jr.'s son, Herschel North, ( married to Lola Cupples) is her grandfather. Their son, Charles Cupples North (married to Eileen Mae Sabin) is her father. |
